Location: Rajgir, Nalanda, Bihar

Before planning about this project, we studied about this ancient city Rajgir (the old name Rajgriha) and its rich mystic history. We studied about Bihar and the significance of Rajgir in the state in terms of its profound bounties of nature which includes its pristine forests and wildlife, its religious history and tourism.

Rajgir has been home to the cultural heritage of Jainism and Buddhism as it was the dwelling ground for the historical figures as Buddha, Mahavira and Bimbisara. Different monuments, exquisitely carved temples and stupas are dotted all over the town. The ancient Nalanda university was located in the vicinity of Rajgir and the contemporary Nalanda university named after it was founded in 2010 and inaugurated in 2024.

The grand scenic beauty of nature, historic monuments, holy rivers, dense forests, captivating wildlife, mystic waterfalls, beautiful handicrafts, savoury cuisines, folk music and dance and most importantly its hospitable people are the wonders that make Rajgir, the supreme tourist destination not only in India but across the globe.

Since Rajgir is one of the leading tourist destinations in Bihar, there is a demand of good hotels and great hospitality as Rajgir attracts substantial number of foreign and domestic tourists every year. Hotel Tathagat Ashok desires to unveil heritage, tradition, luxury and unmatched hospitality.

Design Concept

TATHAGAT: The meaning of Tathagat is an enlightened one: A finder of truth: One who has attained perfection. The city of Rajgir was one of the Buddha’s most important preaching locations and Tathagat itself is a synonym of Buddha. Hence the design concept revolves around the concept of- Tathagat, through the minimalistic architectural design, selection of elements, creation of logo, artworks, installations and engravings of the meaning of Tathagat.. The ambience in the property gives a personal experience of sublimity and awareness thus creating a unique and unforgettable experience for the travellers.

Site

A 2.23 acres site with its own potentials and constraints located on the most prime location of Rajgir surrounded by some prominent low-rise structures, the most eminent being the adjacent convention centre, is an opportunity to create an interesting and incredible design. The site captivates the beautiful mountains around from most of its locations. The site plan design ensures easy access with separate entry and exit gates for both guests and service deliveries, effective traffic flow, and safety. The site layout facilitates smooth operations and provide for amenities like parking, drop-off points, and disability access.

We have designed cohesively and coordinated the following zones based on the flowchart of activities i.e. Hotel building, Banquet Hall, Back of house areas, Party Lawns, Swimming pool, Cottages, Cafeteria, Parking, Services etc.

Hotel Building

There was an existing structure on the site which was in a poor condition. While redesigning and strengthening this structure, we have incorporated our findings through structure stability tests. The architectural modifications were planned in this building in the way that the forms, materials, and functionality of different spaces throughout the hotel reflects our concept and design inspiration, as well as tell our story. We aim to design a property that offers a signature experience to its guests.

The hotel building is a ground plus 3 structure, accommodating 45 rooms including 3 suite rooms, premium rooms, super deluxe rooms and deluxe rooms. The ground floor has an entrance lobby, a restaurant, board room, souvenir shop and office areas. The entrance lobby is the focal point of the building where visitors gather. The unique design, ambience and aesthetics through its plan, colours, lights and artworks provide a warmth and welcoming environment. A multi cuisine restaurant with the specialty of Bihar savoury cuisine is planned at a location that it is separately accessible to outside guests also. The roof of this building captures beautiful scenic views and the perfect evening climate which generated the idea of planning a roof top restaurant and barbeque.

Banquet Hall

A prefab structure with a big hall of approx. 5000 sqft and small hall of 600sqft approx. including rooms and separate back of house facilities.

Party lawns

There are two party lawns. One big lawn of 34000 sqft approx. and area for bigger functions and the other one of 12500 sqft approx. sqft. The second lawn encompass a swimming pool, an area for small functions and pre wedding functions and this lawn is in front of the banquet hall. This can be used separately as well as in sync with the banquet and also for poolside parties and activities.

Façade

The facade is noticeable as it features minimalistic aesthetics with clean lines and a neutral colour palette enhanced by bold contemporary art pieces. The design reflects the brand’s identity and values creating a memorable first impression.
